Tim James BA (Hons) MIET

Tim is widely regarded as one of the UK's leading experts in the field of PAT Testing. He started PAT Testing in 1986 whilst working as a technician in a large secondary school and has been involved in the industry ever since. He's worked in local and national government departments, worked for a private training company and worked with Trading Standards and the IET. He started a commerical PAT Testing business from scratch in 2003 and got that to the point where it employed engineers across the UK carrying out PAT Testing for many national and international companies.

Since forming PAT Testing Expert in 2009, Tim has delivered high quality PAT Testing training across the UK and abroad, working for companies including the BBC, Shell, Virgin and many Universities. He travels across the UK running public courses (which anyone can attend) as well as on-site courses for larger companies.

He is also Standards Director of PATTA (Portable Appliance Testing Trade Association) - a professional association of PAT Testers dedicated to raising standards and improving the reputation of the industry.

In 2018, Tim was invited by the IET to serve on the committee updating the 'Code of Practice for In-Service Inspection and Testing of Electrical Equipment', and has re-written much of the technical content in the guide, especially with regard to test procedures and processes.

The training course is designed so that people with a very limited prior knowledge can gain the skills and knowledge necessary to carry out PAT Testing by the end of the day; but also contains enough expert knowledge so that those who have a background in electricity or engineering will gain plenty of new knowledge too. Electrical safety can be a dry subject to learn, and to teach, but this course is presented in a lively and down to earth style making it easy to understand but engaging for all.
