Up to date and relevant
Our course is fully up to date with BS EN 50699 (published 2021) as well as the latest guidance from the HSE and IET. Tim was on the committee that updated the 5th edition Code of Practice (published 2020.) Tim has 30+ years experience in the industry at all levels.
Train up to 12 people
An in-house course is perfect if you have more than 4 people to train - we can train up to 12 people (subject to space)
At PAT Testing Expert we've been teaching people to carry out testing for many years and we can provide a training course for your staff, at your site. Our trainer, Tim James has been in the PAT Testing industry for more than 30 years, regularly attends sites across the whole of the UK, including schools, offices, factories, hospitals and warehouses to provide training.
An in-house (on-site) course is perfect if you have more than 4 or 5 people to train - we can train up to 12 people if you have that many staff who want to learn. All we ask of you is a large comfortable room to carry out the training; It needs to be quite large with lots of tables for the practical work. If you don't have a dedicated training room we will be happy to advise you further. We'll bring everything necessary for the training - course notes and handouts for everybody, a range of PAT Testing machines to practice on, and a whole variety of appliances to test! If you already have a tester then of course we can incorporate it into the training, and we can also test some of your own appliances on the day if you want! (If you don't have a tester we can advise you which are the best machines to go for - don't buy before the course!)
Unlike many providers, our course is based on a large amount of hands-on practical. After all, PAT Testing is a practical skill and is best learned by 'doing' rather than watching a video or talking about it. Of course there are things that you need to know, but our course cuts out all of the non-relevant information and concentrates on what you actually need to know to be able to do the job effectively; and then gives you an opportunity to put it all into practice in a safe and relevant learning environment.
We have provided on-site training for The BBC, Institute of Mechanical Engineers, Shell, Royal College of Music, Barchester Healthcare, Leeds University, Exeter University, Canford Audio, Rolls Royce, Sodexo, G4S, Drax Power Ltd as well as many local authorities, schools, colleges and large organisations.
Tim is regarded as one of the UK's leading experts in the field of PAT Testing - apart from the fact that he's been involved in the industry for more than 30 years, he's also Standards Director of PATTA - the Portable Appliance Testing Trade Association and represents the PAT Testing industry at all levels including government. He was involved in the writing of the 5th edition Code of Practice, which is regarded as the closest we have to an official guide to PAT Testing and is also up to speed on the latest British Standards (BS EN 50678 and BS EN 50699)
Below is our standard programme - it can be amended to suit your requirements if you prefer. We can also tailor the course to your own requirements, systems or test equipment. You also have the benefit of a Portable Appliance Testing Expert to oversee your existing arrangements, record keeping systems etc and give you advice if required.
Our Course Programme
The programme runs from 09:45am until 4:30pm, lunch and refreshments are included.Further Information About The Course
Learn from the Expert! Our trainer, Tim James has been teaching people to carry out PAT Testing since 1993, and has been involved in the business for much longer - he's widely regarded as one of the UK's leading experts in the field. All relevant legislation will be covered during the day, as well as an overview of the latest guidance from the Health and Safety Executive and other bodies. The content is based on the very latest Code of Practice from the IET (2020 edition) in fact Tim was on the IET committee that updated the guidance. We'll also reference other nationally recognised guidance although participants are reminded that they should follow any rules made their employer especially with regard to frequency of testing, or particular test methods.
Each person attending will be given a copy of the course manual (handbook) and a certificate of competence. There is no exam on the course, but a long practical session during the day which is supervised closely - giving everybody a chance to put into practice what they learn straight away, and making sure everybody reaches the required standard. Please see the FAQ section for more information about the certificate and the legal requirements.
This is a practical course, and so a large training room is required, with lots of tables for the practical exercises. A school classroom or similar is ideal - a boardroom with one big table down the middle is not so good. Also please note that we will be bringing a lot of equipment, so a room on the ground floor (or a lift) is appreciated! We'll send you more information about this, and we can help you find a suitable room in a local hotel or conference centre if you don't have suitable space in your premises.
