Meet Your Trainer

Albert Einstein once said, “If you can’t explain it simply, you don’t understand it well enough.” This profound insight is the foundation of our approach when we teach. True mastery of a subject isn’t just about deep knowledge—it’s about the ability to communicate that knowledge clearly and effectively, no matter who you’re teaching.

Tim James is widely regarded as one of the UK's leading experts in the field of PAT Testing. He started PAT Testing in 1986 whilst working as a technician in a large secondary school, and PAT Testing has been part of his roles ever since. He's worked in local government, central government and with Trading Standards. He started a commercial PAT Testing business in 2003 and took that from a 2 person company to an organisation employing a large team of PAT Testing engineers.

Since forming PAT Testing Expert in 2009, Tim has delivered high quality PAT Testing training for many universities and colleges, the BBC, many big industrial companies and hundreds of individuals throughout the UK and Europe. He is also Standards Director of the PATTA (Portable Appliance Testing Trade Association) - a professional association of PAT Testers dedicated to raising standards and improving the reputation of the industry.

In 2019, Tim was invited by the IET to serve on the committee updating the 'Code of Practice for In-Service Inspection and Testing of Electrical Equipment', and has re-written much of the content, especially with regard to test procedures and pass levels. The course is also fully updated with the two new British Standards, (BS EN 50699 and BS EN 50678) so you can be sure you're getting the most up-to-date information available.

This training seminar is based on more than 30 years experience of electrical safety in a variety of different industries and is presented in a lively, yet down to earth and easy to understand format. Whether you're a beginner or an expert, Tim will explain and the topics in a way that makes them accessible and engaging. Our goal is not only to help you learn but to ensure you truly understand the background of PAT Testing, so you can apply it with confidence. We always recommend that you treat the course as the 'Starting Point' of your journey, and back up what you learn on the day with some real world PAT Testing as soon as possible after the course has finished. The more you do, they more confident you will be!
